The key to taking vitamin C is therapeutic dosing in the form of bowel tolerance. Everyone's bowel tolerance is going to be different thus dosing is going to be individualized. The body needs more C to heal oxidative stress, so expect your tolerance to increase drastically when fighting illness, disease, injury, allergies, etc. As your body heals, your tolerance will lower and you can decrease doses. For children, a general rule of thumb to begin is 1 gram for each year of life.
